About Western Connecticut State University

Western Connecticut State University, also known as Western, WestConn or simply WCSU, is a public university in Danbury, which is a city in northern Fairfield County, in the US state of Connecticut, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 80 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the county's largest city and the state's 7th largest city.

WCSU was established in 1903 and it started as a teacher's college, having the mission to train the primary and secondary school educators for Connecticut's Fairfield County and surrounding areas. Over the years, its name was changed several times, its current name being adopted in 1983.

The university has 2 campuses, which are 5 miles apart, and which are connected by a campus bus service, the Danbury campus being the institution's original campus.

Athletics

WestConn's sports teams are known as the Colonials and they compete in 14 varsity sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are dark blue and metallic copper.
